We were delighted to welcome Georgina Porter as our guest presenter for this month’s CAMHS Forum. Georgina is an Integrative Child and Adolescent Counsellor and registered member of the BACP, with extensive experience supporting children and young people across a wide range of emotional and relational challenges. She has a particular interest in attachment theory and neuroscience, and how early relationships shape a child’s internal blueprint for understanding themselves, others, and the world around them.

In this session, Georgina explored the importance of infant attachment, focusing on early maternal bonding, the developing brain, and how these foundational relationships influence emotional regulation, behaviour, and later relational patterns. Drawing on attachment theory alongside developmental neuroscience, she considered how early caregiving experiences impact babies’ neurological development and long-term wellbeing.

Attendees experienced a thoughtful and practical overview of why early attachment matters, how disruptions in bonding can present later in childhood, and how professionals working with infants, children and families can support secure attachment. The session offered a compassionate, developmentally informed perspective on the earliest relationships and their lasting impact on emotional health and resilience.

Georgina shared the following book recommendations throughout her presentation:

Why Love Matters, by Sue Gerardt

The Whole Brain Child, by Dr Dan Siegel & Dr Tina Payne Bryson

John Bowlby and Attachment Theory, by Jeremy Holmes

The Neurobiology of Attachment Focused Therapy, by Babylon and Hughes
