What is psychotherapy and how does it work?
Psychotherapy is a talking therapy that aims to support you in making positive changes in your life. It works by helping you gain insight into your feelings, choices, and behaviors. For learning and change to occur in therapy, consistency is important, as is building a strong therapeutic relationship with your therapist. At Portobello Behavioural Health, we offer various forms of support, including talking therapy, art and creative therapy. Our experienced therapists provide individual, family, and group therapy to both children and adults, offering support for a range of challenges such as eating problems, depression, anxiety, and substance use, among others.
Can I contact my therapist outside of the sessions?
For administrative matters, you can contact your therapist via email.
What if I want to stop therapy?
Ideally, the decision to end therapy will be a collaborative discussion between you and your therapist. If we don't hear from you for two weeks outside of any pre-arranged breaks, your therapist will assume you wish to discontinue therapy and will send you a discharge notice.
How long is a therapy session?
Standard individual therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. Longer sessions may be available depending on your needs and what is most suitable for you.
Can I have online therapy?
We offer both in-person therapy sessions and the convenience of online therapy.
Do I have to commit to seeing my therapist weekly?
For the consistency needed for personal growth, we generally recommend weekly sessions. However, we understand that flexibility may be required and this can be discussed with your therapist. Weekly contact is particularly beneficial at the beginning to establish a strong therapeutic connection, but we can certainly explore flexible arrangements if appropriate.

Encourage healthy activities and non-gambling based relationships and celebrate recovery successes. People living with gambling addiction can also be personally affected and they often benefit themselves by getting professional support through therapy or from support groups for families.
Do you provide confidential support?

We pride ourselves on our discretion. Our flexible approach to support means that we can often work with clients in a way which suits their needs for privacy.
Can you refer me to a treatment centre/psychiatrist/psychologist?
We work with a variety of providers and professionals in the addiction and mental health field. We often work alongside these professionals to provide wrap-around care. If PBH is not the right service for you, or we feel we are not the right fit for you we will happily make a recommendation to another provider that may be able to help.
Does PBH follow a particular treatment approach or modality?
The way we support clients is flexible as we recognise that different people are at different stages in their road to wellness. We do not advocate or prescribe a particular modality but do recognise that clients who are engaged in self-destructive behaviours often need to be supported to stop or minimise the behaviour in order for their recovery to progress. However, we also acknowledge that this is not a linear process and as such lapses are frequent and we are adept at dealing with them.

This is part of the risk of the process and will be explained to all involved as part of the process.
